“A one and a two . . . ” It’s tough to count the many reasons to plan a trip to San Diego, but the most motivating might be the 25% discount being offered now at Welk Resort San Diego. Name sound familiar? It should. Bandleader Lawrence Welk, the man famous for creating “champagne music” also created a warm, sunny vacation spot worth toasting.
Located on 450 acres just north of San Diego, the Welk Resort is close to the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, LEGOLAND, and the beach – a plus if you decide to leave. The newly-renovated resort has five separate recreation centers (think basketball, volleyball and more), eight pools, two watersides, and a list of resort activities like weekly Dive-In Family Movie Nights. Be sure and get the latest Activities Guide when you check in.

TESTED: The costs can fluctuate greatly depending on your dates. I tested Thursday, April 24th through Saturday the 26th, and got rates of $177.12 and $225.00, the more expensive rate for Friday night. With room tax the total was $434.29. When I went for a weekend stay, Friday, May 2nd through Sunday, May 5th, prices went up. $209.52 for Friday night and $292.00 for Saturday. Add in tax for a bill of $541.64.
FOR WELK FANS: If you grew up watching Lawrence Welk and the streams of large bubbles move across the bandstand, the Resort is also home to a museum with memorabilia highlighting the life and career of the legendary bandleader. The 339-seat Welk Theatre is also the home stage to a number of Broadway-style musicals throughout the year.
COOL TIDBIT: In 1964, Lawrence Welk went for a drive in the country north of San Diego, planning to invest in a grove of orange trees. Instead he bought a motel and a nine-hole golf course, and your next vacation was born.
Have fun and let me know what the favorite part of your stay was.
