At the tail end of this summer my husband and I were more than ready for a parental escape. After weeks of summer camps, play dates and family trips – we were excited to have a night to ourselves. We stayed at The Westin San Diego Gaslamp as part of the Starwood California’s Weekend Campaign, and got to pick our hotel based on its prime spot amid all the fun things to do in San Diego’s hopping Gaslamp district. Restaurants, bars, sea-side walks and oh the shopping, so much great shopping! I grew up in the suburbs of San Diego, and now live in North County San Diego, but I so rarely go downtown that our #CaliforniaWeekend was as much of a treat as having a romantic sleepover in a city we’d never been to.
The vibrancy of Downtown San Diego is exciting if nothing else. Bicycle pedicabs buzz by with tourists, singles line up outside bars for a chance to get inside and see a band or meet someone new, Padres fans crowd the streets dressed in their navy blue pride, or brown and yellow vintage best. There is extra buzz when it’s game time so we we called in some friends from L.A. and went to a game.
Our Deluxe Room felt spacious. The hotel has recently gone through a $25 million renovation with redesigned public areas —hello, anybody who was anybody was hanging out in the lobby—a new gym, meeting spaces and restaurant. But there was way too much to do out on the streets to stay inside for too long.
While we delved into the Gaslamp bar scene and enjoyed cocktails at Bailiwick and rooftop bar LoungeSix and the ground level bar JSix—two fave eats that I definitely have to pass on to you is the foodie breakfast hotspot Donut Bar, and, believe it or not, the surprisingly fresh and delicious salads at the Italian Pinzimini right there at the Westin. I normally don’t eat at hotel restaurants unless timing drives the decision, but I’d come back for a salad here any time. The shrimp were perfect.
Sadly, we only stayed one night. If I had stayed just one more night I could’ve dived right into all endless shopping opportunities at Horton Plaza. The Westin is in an absolutely idea location for this activity. You can shop till you drop and literally crawl into the hotel if you had to. It’s that close!
Full Disclosure: Although our night and meal at Piznimini at San Diego Westin Gaslamp was hosted, Starwood did not request that I express any particular point of view. All opinions are my own.
