MAUI: Kaanapali Resort Giveaway #KidsNTrips Feb 8, 2018

Cora_s_first_snorkel_trip___sailtrilogy__kaanapalimaui__caldwellsinmaui__instagood__instafun__familytravel__maui

There are places and moments in your child’s life that you will never forget. One of my most memorable moments was when our daughter took her first look under the surface of the Pacific Ocean. We were on a Trilogy snorkel cruise in Maui and Cora was five-years-old. She was hesitant to get off the boat and get in the water. John told her to just look under the water, and when she finally did she didn’t want to stop. That single moment, one of many milestones she’d have in her life, is one that I think about often. When I do think about it, I want to rush back to Maui and relive the magic. I’ve had several amazing trips to Maui, but the mere mention of a return trip to Kaanapali lights up the whole family. As much fun as we’ve already had, there’s still so much to explore, so many fun activities still yet to try. This week on Thursday, January 18, 2018, we will have a #KidsNTrips Twitter Party sponsored by Kaanapali Resorts where will talk about family travel to Kaanapali, Maui. They will be giving away a two-night stay at Royal Lahaina Resort, and four more fun gifts from Maui. Join us to win!

RoyalLahainaFacebook

Kaanapali, Maui is an iconic family Hawaiian vacation. It’s a year-round destination with 13 properties to choose from including five luxury hotels you’ll have a tough time choosing between and eight condo and vacation resort club resorts for when you need a little bit more room to spread out.  We’ve already stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa,  The Westin Maui Resort & SpaKaanapali Alii, and Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas and say we’d return to all of them!

10 Favorite Family Activities on Maui

Maui is everything you want it to be—fun, romantic, relaxing, an epicurious adventure—take your pick. There’s a diverse array of activities at Kaanapali no matter what type of vacation you’re dreaming of.  If you’re headed to Maui with children, some of the activities we’d recommend are:

  • Spend time together at the beach
  • Splash around at the pool
  • Take the kids to a “keiki” program at a resort to learn how to hula or learn about a cultural craft
  • Attend a luau
  • Visit the whaling museum
  • Pet a miniature horse at the Maui Animal Farm
  • Have breakfast at Slappy Cakes
  • Explore the Maui Ocean Center
  • Shop for a souvenir at Whaler’s Village
  • and of course,  take a Trilogy snorkeling cruise!

There are the things that I still want to do with Cora and John on our next trip to Maui…

  • Go to the Maui Fair in October
  • Eat some Hawaiian Shave Ice at Ululani’s
  • Zipline at any of Maui’s zipline tours including Skyline Ka’anapali
  • See the waterfalls on the drive to Hana
  • Watch the sunrise at Haleakala National Park

#KIDSNTRIPS Teen Road Rules Twitter Party (And $100 Giveaways!) AUG 17

LibertyMutualKidsNTripsTwitterPartyThe new school year is about to start. And with that comes new teen drivers. We know because we live next to a high school. We’re all to familiar with a variety of teen driving issues from speeding, to kids walking down the middle of streets where other students are driving through them – maybe paying attention, maybe not. However I had no clue about the statistics regarding overconfident youth and their driving behaviors. Liberty Mutual Insurance and SADD partnered for a new study out that reveals the attitudes and behaviors of teen drivers. And you might be surprised. We’ll be talking about all sorts of teen driving and parenting tips this Thursday for our KidsNTrips Twitter Party sponsored by Liberty Mutual. Please join us!

Prizes! We will be giving away Four $100 Visa gift cards awarded to four #KidsNTrips participants. See details below.

How Parents Can Encourage Save Driving Behavior with Teens

  • Keep practicing: Nearly 40 percent of teens say their parents stop practicing driving with them after they get their license. Teaching shouldn’t stop when teens leave the DMV with a license in hand. Parents should continue to drive with their teens and remind them of safe driving behaviors with frequent check-ins and conversations.
  • Hold each other accountable: Mom, dad and teens can all be held accountable and parents can set a good example with today’s new monitoring technology like Liberty Mutual’s HighwayHero app. The app tracks and scores driving behavior based on factors including phone usage while driving, acceleration, hard braking and speeding and even rewards drivers with a discount on auto insurance in select states.
  • Reward safe driving: Parents can consider regularly rewarding their teen for safe driving. Rather than focusing on the consequences of bad driving behavior, a reward like a break from a specific chore or a $10 gift card, could be an effective way to remind teens to think about their actions while driving.
  • Set expectations: Liberty Mutual Insurance and SADD encourage parents and teens to use the Teen Driving Contract  as a conversation starter and discussion guide. This tool covers important safety issues and is an easy roadmap for parents and teens alike to uphold family driving rules.

How to Grab a Summer Travel Deal with Daily Getaways

plan for vacation baby
Are you counting the days until Summer? We are! Even though we live in Southern California where you can have fun outdoors almost all year round, we still can’t wait for school to go on break. There’s something about planning what to do during Summer that adds extra excitement. The local parks have free family movie nights, libraries offer great free programming and activities for kids, even getting a softie from the ice cream truck is more of a treat during the summer months. There’s never a shortage to actually do over Summer, but if you were hoping to take a vacation, or try a theme park you haven’t been to yet, grabbing a deal over the Summer can take a bit of planning.

The U.S. Travel Association puts together a great list of travel deals on the website Daily Getaways. I’ll show you how you can grab some heavily discounted tickets to theme parks and great rates on hotels, too! Even better, if you participate in the April 20, 2017 #KidsNTrips Twitter Party you have the chance to win one of two $100 AMEX gift cards (which can always be used on travel!). Details below…

DailyGetaways Universal Sutdios

Daily Getaways

WHAT: Deeply discounted points and packages from big name travel brands for hotel room nights, car rentals, theme park admission and more. New Daily Getaways deals in 2017 include offers from MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, Loews Hotels and many more. Top deals include travel packages such as a such as a three-night stay at The Mirage Las Vegas for $1,750 to 50 percent off deals to save on Alamo car rentals. Other deals include admission to your choice of any three SeaWorld® parks, your choice of Busch Gardens® parks, or tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood(SM) or Universal Orlando Resort™ with savings up to 50 percent.

WHO: U.S and Canadian residents, age 18 or older, are permitted to purchase available offers throughout the promotion period or until the limited inventory is sold out. Quantities are limited and individual offer terms apply.

WHEN: Preview deals on April 3 and begin buying on April 10. Each weekday a new exclusive offer from a prominent travel brand is unveiled on DailyGetaways.com at 1 p.m. EDT, and it becomes available for purchase throughout the promotion period, while supplies last. Daily Getaways concludes Wednesday, May 10. You can view the Daily Getaways calendar here:

WHERE: www.dailygetaways.com
Daily Getaways SeaWorld

What I love about these deals, besides the opportunity to save money, is that they’re not all about hotels. There are plenty of local families in our area of San Diego that can’t afford to travel far away for a Summer holiday, but they could grab a $50 Sea World ticket. That might not be much of a deal if you’re going in the Spring, but if you don’t have the time to go until Summer, then you’re saving $23/ticket and if you’re bringing the whole family that adds up fast!

TIP: Make sure that you are ready to buy that deal at 1 p.m. I already missed the Omni hotel deal because I was an hour late getting to my computer. The U.S. Travel Association promotes their deals on Twitter

DailyGetawaysCaesars
As you can imagine, I jumped when I saw this deal! My husband and I are trying to get back to Vegas for our 10 year anniversary this summer. Caesars is where I first stayed with my grandparents when they took me to Vegas after turning twenty-one. That resort will always have a special place in my heart – even if I can’t always afford to gamble there the way I’d like to!

TIP: If you see a deal that you like, don’t miss the “Alert me” link. Click on that and it will take you to a page where you can give them your email address if you want to know when that particular deal becomes available. Opt in for other deal email notifications, too.

#KIDSNTRIPS Twitter Party (and Giveaway!) MARCH 16 —History is Fun!

JS-Powhtan-Indian-village-cooking_800

There’s an amazing side bonus to any type of family travel — the opportunity to connect your children with the stories and history of a place. No matter where you vacation, there is a back story, roots, and a culture that dates back decades if not hundreds or even thousands of years. When children are learning about the world in school, their hearts and minds are already soaking up information and interesting lessons, why not connect what they are learning in school with an experience from the destination that they are learning about? Adding fun experiences, adventure, and spending time with family while kids are learning about a place can leave a lasting impression. Making family memories together while learning is an incredible win win approach to travel.  We will be talking about this at our next #KidsNTrips Twitter Party this Thursday, March 16, 2017, with our sponsor the Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum.

Yorktown-Victory-Celebration-Oct-15-16-Yorktown-Victory-Center

Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

Our sponsor, Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum, is having its Grand Opening Celebration of the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown March 23-April 4 culminating the museum’s 10-
year transformation from the Yorktown Victory Center.

The celebration will include daily highlights of one of America’s 13 original states in the order that they ratified the Constitution, with a dedication ceremony on April 1. Patriotic festivities include gallery tours, living-history programs, artillery firings, flag-raising ceremonies, military musical performances, military re-enactments, lectures and children’s activities.

JS-Ships-navigation-tools

Visiting the two museums is an incredible opportunity to learn more about the people who lived in America during colonial times, why the American colonies went to war with Britain, what happened during the American Revolution and how the United States grew into a new nation after the war.

Whether you can visit this year, or if you want to bookmark the museums for a future trip, there is a lot of historical information and classroom learning center tools to explore on the museum’s website.

#KIDSNTRIPS Twitter Party (And Giveaway!) JAN 24 —Winter Driving Tips

Driving during winter weather can be daunting. I know because we recently canceled a weekend ski trip to Tahoe during California’s “Storm of the Century.” I wasn’t proud of canceling. We really wanted to go, but the truth was that I was intimidated by the thought of putting chains on the tires. So, we wimped out and didn’t go. In hindsight, there were alternative solutions we could’ve turned to. Join us on Tuesday, January 24 for our #KidsnTrips Twitter Party with Chip Wade and Liberty Mutual as we give you the lowdown on winter driving tips.  After all, your kids delighting in the snow will make every effort worth it.

Winter Driving Tips

Some of the tips we will cover at the #KidsNTrips Winter Driving Twitter party:

  • What to pack to stay safe in case of an emergency
  • What car issues mechanics should check before a winter road trip
  • How to deal with unexpected situations during a road trip
  • How to prep your home for being gone for extended periods of time

#KIDSNTRIPS Twitter Party (And Giveaway!) OCT 18 —Safe Teen Driving

LMI-Twitter-Chat-Graphic-October

Liberty Mutual is fighting the good fight to keep teen drivers safe on the road. They are sponsoring another KidsNTrips Twitter party this coming Tuesday (October 18, 2016). It takes me back to when I was a teen. I wasn’t driving, but my friends were. And I can guarantee you that my dad might not have asked my friends (or their parents) about any safety specifics before I jumped in the car. Back then you just wanted your kid to wear a seatbelt, and trusted that air bags would help too if there was an accident. With the addition of smartphones, apps, GPS navigation, let alone WiFi — driving in a car today is a much different experience. Please join #KidsNTrips on Tuesday to learn about safe teen driving tips (and win one of four $100 Visa gift cards).

Safety Tips for Parents & Teen Drivers That Have Me Thinking Ahead

  • Make safe teen driving a priority for the whole family. Sing a teen driving contract: http://bit.ly/1Xxq4Cs
  • It’s not all about driving under the influence, teach teens not to drive while drowsy or upset.
  • The car is not a party mobile – drive with three or less teenage passengers in the car.
  • Kids learn safe driving from watching their parents – don’t text in the car. Practice safe driving while your kids are younger, too.
  • Parents, don’t text your teen if you know they’re driving.
  • Consider what environments are stressful for your new teen driver. (Eg. Avoid driving during rush hour)
  • “Tired Teen Driving” is real. Talk to your teens about safe alternatives.

#KIDSNTRIPS Twitter Party (And Giveaway!) June 9 — California Road Trips!

2014-11-26 Cora in SF
Cora’s first travel experience was a road trip to San Francisco when she was barely a month old. We cruised up Interstate 5 from San Diego to the Bay Area to visit with friends I’d made when I lived there several years prior. And we’ve been making that trip a few times a year ever since. But as good as it feels to be able to get to San Francisco by dinner time, there’s a lot more to see in California than I-5. California is a magical blend of iconic destinations, jaw dropping Instagram photo opportunities, endless sunshine, best in class theme parks, best in class cities, and natural wonders that will change your thinking about the world and yourself.

Visit California has teamed up with KidsNTrips to talk about California Summer Road Trips. We hope that you will join us, not only to take your shot at winning the hotel stay in San Francisco and four San Francisco CityPasses, but to learn about this great state of ours and share some of the hard-won family road trip tips and pics you’ve garnered while traversing California.

California for Adventurous Families

When we leave California to travel, I’m always hunting for activities fit for a 7-year old adventuress. But what about right here in the this Golden State that I was born in? There are so many opportunities that you could create a bucket list without leaving our borders. We’ve been horseback riding in Lake Tahoe, skiing in Mammoth, took a pool break or two in Palm Springs, and went whale watching in Dana Point. This is barely a knick on the tip of the ice berg of what California has to offer. The options are near endless. If you have some extra time this summer, plan a California family road trip. Here are a few ideas to get your itinerary started:

  • Camping under the redwoods at Redwood National and State Parks
  • Ride horses along a windswept beach in Mendocino County
  • Train to be a volcanologist at Lassen Volcanic National Park
  • Rafting the American River in Gold Country
  • Spelunking, climbing and zip-lining at Vallecito
  • Rock climbing, Joshua Tree
  • Fly-fishing, Lake Tahoe
  • Skateboarding, Orange County

Adventure awaits in California’s mountains, deserts, urban jungles, and the beaches that exist as the ultimate backyard retreat.
